Yitzhar detainee’s remand extended, attorney Ben-Gvir: “This is a showcase detention for PR purposes

Sunday, May 4, 17:13 On Sunday, May 4 the Jerusalem Magistrate Court extended the remand of the husband of the second couple from Yitzhar until Wednesday, May 7. The second couple was detained on Wednesday, April 30, as was the other couple from Yitzhar who were released the following day, due to suspicion that their car was involved with a “Price Tag” incident in Umm al-Fahm. Initially the police, in a most irregular step, prevented the detainees from meeting with their attorney, Itamar Ben-Gvir, who is representing them on behalf of Honenu. The wife of the man whose remand was extended today was released on Friday, May 2. She met with Ben-Gvir for the first time 24 hours after she was detained, before her husband met with Ben-Gvir, and raised serious claims concerning the manner of her interrogation and the great pressure under which her interrogator put her, apparently in order to force her to confess to acts to which she is not connected.

On Thursday, May 1 the court extended her husband’s remand until Sunday, May 4, when Jerusalem Magistrate Judge Dana Cohen-Lekach extended his remand until Wednesday, May 7.

In response to the remand extension attorney Ben-Gvir stated that, “The remand extension stems only from public pressure by politicians, the same politicians who remain silent when synagogues are burnt in Lod or Jewish graves are desecrated on the Mount of Olives. They are the politicians who are currently pressuring the police to make false detentions. The police also know that my client was not present at the incident in Umm al-Fahm. He gave a full and detailed alibi which was authenticated. This is a showcase detention for PR purposes only. We are on our way to the Jerusalem District Court in order to file an appeal on this decision.”
