Wednesday, January 26, 2022, 9:35 On the morning of Wednesday, January 26, Honenu Attorney Ariel Atari sent an urgent letter on behalf of the Sandak family to Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit, demanding that he issue a clarification stating that the announcements regarding his intent to close the investigative case against the policemen who killed Ahuvia, z”l, are erroneous. Alternatively, the family demanded that if the reports are correct, that he would meet with representatives of the family so that they would be able to present their position and the information that they have to him. The letter, which was sent by Honenu Attorney Ariel Atari on behalf of the family, is summarized below:
Over the past few days, announcements regarding His Honor’s opinion of bringing to trial those responsible for the death of Ahuvia, z”l, have been publicized. The announcements are attributed to ‘close associates’ of His Honor. It is our hope that the statements did not come from the Office of the Attorney General and that they are erroneous.
In light of this, the family is demanding that the Attorney General issue a clarification that the statements are not correct, or if they are correct, to hold a meeting with the family before the decision is made. Therefore, we ask His Honor to issue an announcement clarifying that the information did not come out of his office and that the information does not reflect his final opinion. If the information is not erroneous, we ask His Honor, the Attorney General, to meet with my client and their attorney before the decision, so that they may present to him their opinion and their information.
There is great importance to the decision being made in a considered manner, after hearing all of the family’s claims, and it is important for the public’s trust in the judicial system. “We reiterate that this involves parents who lost their son in a tragic encounter with policemen, which received much publicity. A decision made with a clear conscience after considering all of the aspects is of great importance to the trust of the public in the law enforcement and judicial systems. Therefore, we hope that there have not been intentional ‘leaks’ from His Honor’s office and that before the decision is made, His Honor will hold a meeting as stated above.”
In conclusion, we will note that a highly offensive rumor has been brought to the attention of my clients that His Honor’s office would like to publicize the decision during stormy weather and thereby prevent legitimate public demonstrations. My clients have explained to the source who transferred the information to them that such conduct is inconceivable and that they do not believe that you would make such a consideration. We hope that the safeguarding of my clients in your consideration concerning this matter is not detached from reality. For the sake of justice, morality, probity, and integrity, we ask for a positive and prompt reply to our request.
